Milisa Galazzi "Tactile Expressions"

On Tuesday April 20, I had the pleasure of having a studio visit with Milisa Galazzi in Providence RI. Milisa is one of eleven artists I have selected to participate in "Pollination-beyond the garden." This is a show I am curating for the fall of 2011 at the Brush Gallery in Lowell, MA (look forward to hearing more about this show.) After our studio visit, Milisa took me to her exhibition "Tactile Expressions" at the Krause Gallery of the Moses Brown School, in Providence.  She is one of three artists in the show, which ends April 22 with a closing reception on the 21st. Misa, as we fondly call her, works in encaustic with textile impressions and embellishments. The work is deeply layered and highly textured.  I am especially drawn to the fossilized-looking texture. It evokes a sense of ancient history and tarnish, especially in the monochromatic palette she uses. I find the  delicate textiles, impressed and built up in the wax,  create gestural and minimalist imagery and have a lyrical quality.  There is a force of movement that draws you in and leads you through the gallery. Here are some installation photos of her work. Thank you Misa for a great day!
